Getting the Right Ring Size

A Mayors Guide

At Mayors, we consider ourselves to be the experts when it comes to engagement rings, and we recognise that obtaining the perfect fit is extremely important. With that in mind, we will work with you to ensure you find the perfect ring with the perfect fit.

To help you find the right ring size this table shows the inside circumference of each US ring size. Please note that this is a guide only and that having your finger measured in any one of our showrooms is the most accurate way to find out your ring size.

You can print this off and use it to quickly work out your own, or your partner’s, ring size.

Ring Size (UK) Circumference (mm) Ring Size (UK) Circumference (mm)
A 37.8 N 53.8
B 39.1 P=O 55.1
C 40.4 P 56.3
D 41.7 Q 57.6
E 42.9 R 58.9
F 44.2 S 60.2
G 45.5 T 61.4
H 46.8 U 62.7
I 48.0 V 64.0
J 48.7 W 65.3
K 50.0 X 66.6
L 51.2 Y 67.8
M 52.5 Z 68.5

The thicker the ring, the tighter the fit, so if you choose a ring with a deep band width, you will likely need to go one size up.

The best time of day to measure is in the evening, when your fingers are largest. Avoid measuring when you’re cold, as fingers are at least half a size smaller.

Our stores stock ladies’ rings in sizes J-P, and men’s rings in sizes P-V, but we can also order any US ring size for you: from the smallest, A, to the largest, Z. We also offer half sizes, so you really can find the perfect fit with us.

As a trusted British jeweller since 1910, Mayors offers professional ring finger measurements: we always recommend these before you purchase your rings, but we also recognise that this isn’t always possible, particularly if you are planning a surprise proposal.

What if the Ring Still Turns out to be the Wrong Fit?

Remember that the printable ring sizer is not a professional measurement and should be used more as a guide or an estimate; a meeting with one of our in-store experts is the best way to ensure you have the exact size.

If the worst happens and you select a ring in the incorrect size, Mayors expert jewellery craftspeople can resize it for you.

The only exception to this service is with eternity and some other gemstone rings: due to the setting, these cannot be resized, although they can be exchanged for an alternative size.

What if you're Planning a Surprise Proposal?

Aside from the where, what, why and how of your surprise proposal, getting a ring to fit your intended's finger ahead of time can be a tricky prospect.

The following are a few tips for secretly obtaining your partner's ring size, gleaned from the collective knowledge of our experienced team here at Mayors. Once you have discovered your partner's size, you will be better able to peruse our extensive collection of diamond solitaire and gem-set engagement rings in a full choice of precious metals.

The simplest way to find your partner's ring size is to 'borrow' a ring they already wear. As engagement and wedding rings are typically worn on the third finger of the left hand, it's perhaps unlikely that that finger is already adorned. Simply choose a ring usually worn on the middle finger instead, and be prepared to go down a size or two for the right fit.

Once you have managed to source an appropriate ring, head to your local Mayors store, where our experts will be on hand to size match it for you.

Alternative Ring Sizing Options

If your partner is likely to notice the disappearance of a ring, then carefully draw around the inside of the ring on a piece of paper, for a more approximate size guide. You can then bring this piece of paper into the store, where we will be able to get a good estimate of sizing.

Your partner's friends and family are a great source of help if you're still struggling to find the right size. They may be better placed to get the ring size without raising suspicion, so if you can enlist their help, take advantage of it. Just be sure that they will keep your secret if you want the proposal to be a surprise.

If in doubt, choose a slightly larger size. It is easier to make a larger ring smaller without damaging the integrity of the piece, and it will also help to salvage the romance of the moment if the ring is a little too large than if it simply won't go onto your beloved's finger.

The Next Stage

Once you have the ring size, our team of engagement ring experts can provide you with everything you need to know about which ring style will work well for your partner: from shape, to diamond cut, and metal type - we are the engagement ring experts with almost 240 years of quality, tradition, and craftsmanship behind us.

Additionally, Mayors is proud to hand-make wedding rings and engagement rings in the Florida. We'll talk you through different stones, colours of metals, engravings and shape to ensure you find exactly the ring you're looking for.

If you prefer to go ring shopping together, then bring your partner into your local store. We will provide champagne and special treatment, so that you can spend some time looking at engagement rings together, choosing the one that best reflects your lifestyle, relationship, and aesthetic preferences.
