Patek Philippe has long been celebrated for its mastery of complicated watchmaking, but after the stock market crash of 1929, even its loyal clientele had to tighten their belts. Recognizing the moment, Jean and Charles Henri Stern—who had just taken a controlling interest in the firm—turned to English designer David Penney with a radical but straightforward brief: create a more accessible watch that still embodied the spirit of Patek Philippe.

Guided by the clean, function-first principles of the Bauhaus school, Penney designed the Calatrava in 1932, named after the 12th-century Spanish military order whose cross had become the brand’s emblem. The result was a watch defined by balance, restraint, and perfect proportions—a time-only design that would become the blueprint for nearly every dress watch that followed, even beyond Patek’s own collection.

This particular Calatrava, reference 5524R, is Patek Philippe’s bold take on the pilot’s watch. The 42mm rose gold case features a sapphire crystal, signed crown, and distinctive dual pushers at 8 and 10 o’clock that control an intuitive jumping hour mechanism. Its sunburst brown dial, with luminous Arabic numerals, a subsidiary date display, and home/local time indicators, strikes a rare balance between warmth and technical precision.

Powered by Patek’s automatic calibre 26-330 S C FUS and visible through a sapphire caseback, this watch pairs with a brown leather strap and matching rose gold buckle. Complete with its original pamphlet and 2022 Certificate of Origin, it’s more than a modern interpretation—it’s proof that simplicity, when done by Patek Philippe, can be as powerful as any complication.

10-Day Returns For Timepieces:

Timepieces purchased online can be returned or exchanged within 10 days from when they are shipped or collected.

30-Day Returns For All Other Purchases:

All other online purchases can be returned or exchanged within 30 days from when they are shipped or collected.

On presentation of the original receipt, your purchases may be returned or exchanged at any of our store locations. Alternatively, you may elect shipping to our facility with all the original paperwork. All refunds must be credited to the same tender used for the original purchase. To return the online purchases through secure shipping service, please contact our client service team who will provide you the shipping label.

All returns or exchanges must be in new, unworn condition, with no scratches or markings, not sized or adjusted and in their original packaging and with warranty cards / certificated and instruction booklets.
