70 Years Of Panerai

By Sarah Jayne Potter | 3 minute read

Famously, Italian watch house Panerai started out by supplying diving watches to the Italian Navy. It distinguished itself by introducing techniques that made its watch numerals and indexes glow, most famously with the creation of a luminous substance called Luminor, which subsequently became the name of the brand’s most popular family of timepieces. It’s this same watch family that celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, with the brand declaring 2020 ‘The Year of Luminor’.

AISI 316L 1.4435 stainless steel is Officine Panerai’s material par excellence since it is highly resistant to corrosion and is hypoallergenic, making it ideal for contact with the skin. The Panerai watches created for the Italian Navy were made of austenitic stainless steel, a reliable material that was also resistant to the extreme environmental conditions in which the commandos operated
