Proving that bigger doesn’t necessarily mean better, Panerai has evolved with the shifting tides of time, reshaping the Luminor Marina Collection with the new Luminor Marina Quaranta.

Panerai enthusiasts will be delighted to hear that the emblematic features of the Luminor Marina have been retained and the cushion-shaped case with brushed finish, solid lugs and polished bezel and crown guard that make it so identifiable to the eye, still remain. The new Luminor Marina Quaranta (Quaranta meaning ‘Forty’ in Italian) is a smaller, 40mm model and revives a case size once part of its history whilst also embracing the technology and style of today with functionalities that afford it added versatility.

Of course, the reshaping of the Luminor Marina is not all about the evolution of technology. Panerai also recognized the need to broaden the versatility and appeal of the model to a more diverse audience. As the smallest Luminor Marina currently in production, the Luminor Marina Quaranta projects an elegant silhouette with a casual yet confident attitude that will appeal to the more cosmopolitan and urban crew of today.

The 40mm stainless steel case is available with a choice of three different dial executions, all of which harness a strong aesthetic identity with their seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock and date window at 3 o’clock. Each dial execution is complemented by both an alligator leather and a calf leather strap . The matte white dial features a black alligator or deep brown calf leather strap, a matte black dial is accompanied by a black alligator or black calf leather strap, and the striking sun-brushed blue dial is paired with both navy blue alligator and tobacco calf leather straps. The Quick Release System presents the opportunity to swap and change straps with ease, making the Luminor Marina Quaranta a versatile timepiece to complement any mood or occasion. This versatility has also been enjoyed by the wearers of some of Panerai’s more recent novelties - mainly Panerai Luminor Due models.

Housing the thin P.900 caliber (just 4.2mm) with a power reserve of up to three days and water resistance of up to 100 meters, the new Panerai Luminor Marina Quaranta will now substitute the 42mm reference, broadening its appeal and elevating its style and finesse, precision, and prowess.

We spoke with Heather Grant, Buyer for Specialist Watches, who shared her thoughts on Panerai’s new Luminor Marina Quaranta.

Please can you tell us, in your own words, about the new Panerai Luminor Marina Quaranta?

Equipped with the automatic P.900 caliber, the timepiece carries an approximate 3-day power reserve along with the same small seconds and date functions as the current 44mm model. Available in three commercial colorways, blue, black & white, there are no added frills to these timepieces with their clean-cut sandwich dials. Iconic, timeless, and contemporary, it’s undoubtedly Panerai at its best!

What are the key differences between this new model and the Luminor Marina Collection that we all know and love?

Although many Panerai models are delivered with an additional strap, the key difference for me is the patented new quick release system that has been integrated into these models. The iconic aesthetics of a Panerai still remain however the added visibility and creativity added with this feature is something which I believe to be a huge benefit to this collection and something we will be seeing more of….

What is your favourite piece and why?

My favorite piece is the blue dial PAM01270 variation. Since the addition of the blue 44mm Marina in 2020, they have been a huge hit with our clients and a personal favorite of mine. The beautiful sun brushed dial against the white indexes that glow a green color in the dark is truly wonderful.

Part of the evolution of the Luminor Marina to create the Luminor Marina Quaranta is the reduction in its case size, from 44mm down to 40mm. Historically trends have seen luxury watch brands increase the size of their cases, why do you think Panerai decided to do the opposite here?

I think the new Luminor Marina Quaranta is a welcome introduction into the Panerai range. From our trend analysis we see that ladies often wear a larger case size and especially over recent years; we can see that ladies’ timepieces and collections have established themselves significantly. Ladies’ timepieces are not just a scaled down version of what was there before, but now rather more carefully considered. I think Panerai wanted a collection that lends itself to absolutely everyone and with the quick release system, the Quaranta is the perfect timepiece for just that.

I think this is a collection for everybody. Classic yet modern it's a timepiece that can be worn anywhere. Water resistant to 100 meters, featuring a crown protector and luminescent accents, this piece can take you from the office to the ocean.
